We have heard in the news for many months now  how LeBron James has left the threshold of  Magic, Bird & Jordan, Barkley, Dumar  and Isiah, Dennis Johnson, Dr. J and John Stockton days.  The players that played in the league before the free agency rules were changed, before the players association took a stand against the policies of the league and before the reason one played the game was not media drenched in propaganda. In the 80’s and 90’s the media couldn’t enter the locker room banter with blogs and influence that was tweeted,  typed or faced.  The team was the machine.

Fast forward to today a young man (LeBron James) is subjected to character assassination for using his mind and influence for good and still he should have reached back and talked to the management before a media mindstorm was implemented to that rocked the industry.

The corporate offices of the NBA and the team owners didn’t asked the players  how their TV contracts, extended seasons and corporate deals would trickle down to the players that bound the circuit and give up their family lives to build the billion dollar industry. They were just to play.

Enter LeBron James. He has been marked for greatness for many years through his high school years then with his jump to the NBA. His greatness is not just on the court his opportunity to move his skills and family to Miami has been marked as a traitor to a city not just a team.

Where are the naysayers against  Shaquille O’Neal? There isn’t that much frenzy around his decision to make one more run at a championship ring on a rival team.

Back in the day a Los Angeles Laker player would not go to a rival team  because it was more important for the player to focus all their energy on becoming the best player they could be.  Now it is the machine against the body of human beings. More games, more money. These players don’t want to play ten years. They want it now, and they can build it, if they use their minds.

The ability to be single minded and focus on your craft has evolved into being the best on and off the court and to seduce all of the companies that build empires around you kept in the black.  The amount of pounding subjected to these athletes is unbelievable. If in the heat of battle you are behind the thrust of the microphone and your emotions are blasted across media outlets that in seconds can devour your integrity and sway the masses, what would you do to protect your mind, body, soul and family.

The Los Angeles Lakers defending their title to become repeat Champions of the National Basketball Association last night. Kobe Bryant has evolved to another level of skill sets. This sets up an unbelievable possibility in his illustrious career. As his teammates lifted his inability to calm his assault on the record books and score at ease, Kobe Bryant grew.  I truly believe most basketball fans did not notice that Kobe Bryant relaxed on the court and focused on doing the little things as they have been called, rebounding and playing straight up defense.

He finally relaxed! No effort could will the ball in anymore he had to trust on a level he has never trusted before. And the team showed up.

Until the fourth quarter of the Final Game seven Kobe Bryant and the Lakers played zone defense locking up zones and letting players ( ie Rondo) attack the basket and get second chance rebounds. There was no box out on Rondo.

Kobe Bryant’s defense in Game 5 and 6 was no where to be found.  Now I am not saying he didn’t defend Ray Allen, Paul Pierce and Rajon Rondo in spurts, but this is a All Defensive Team regular. Kobe Bryant ‘s defensive skills rival those of Michael Cooper and Bobby Jones of Championship teams of the past on some levels. He did not play defense.  I understand the need to reserve  enough energy to finish the offensive moves.  So some defensive efforts suffer.  But I do not understand the attitude when you teammates need you to rotate on the weak side and cover the box when they extend themselves in your zone set.  That attitude quietly disappeared in the the fourth quarter  yesterday.  And one note that cannot be overlooked last night, Derek Fisher’s three point shot to tie the game at 64 right at the six minute mark was unbelievably crucial to the win.

If I was a NBA team gearing up for next year I would be very very unsure how in a seven game series for another championship we could beat this team.  Even though Kobe has been wearing twenty four as his jersey number he still has had the old tendencies of number eight, until last night.

Lamar Odom is the same piece of the puzzle the Scotty Pippen was to the Championship rings that “His Airness” earned while playing.  He too had to learn how to Rock.  Lamar Odom lays in the cut and only shows up some of the time. If he could step up and be the One Two combination that dominated in the 90’s, the Lakers will win at least two more championships. Kobe Bryant will not quit until he has seven rings.  The rest he will get this summer the contentment he takes into the off season building on his next new shot and orchestrating another Championship drive next year, is scary.

Kobe Bryant has never had an off season like this one and he will be even better next year. Now he knows that he has a team. He can lay down the rock and play, he has evolved into a teammate. Some may say it happen back when he had the three wins with Shaquille O ‘ Neal.  He was only growing into his evolution at that time. He has evolved. He was majestic this season. And has taken another step towards the throne that awaits his arrival; refinement, attitude and clarity only help the innovation of a basketball king.

Until now Kobe Bryant has not known REST on Offensive HUSTLE on Defense in a Final Game. He has always had to REST on Defense HUSTLE on Offense.
